Interview and Giveaway: The 21-Day Sugar Detox

Excerpt:
The biggest difference between The 21-Day Sugar Detox and Practical Paleo is that The 21-Day Sugar Detox is not inherently a Paleo nutrition program. Our current population has such an immense range of people eating what they think is healthy, but of course I’d disagree with most of them. With my experience and education as a holistic nutritionist, I recognize the real need to bridge the gap between what they are doing and a better way to do things.

I designed The 21-Day Sugar Detox to be more approachable than Paleo sometimes is for those people who are coming from eating lots of grains and refined foods. I don’t think people should just jump in; as I like to say, don’t be a hero. For example, The 21-Day Sugar Detox has 3 levels and level 1 includes gluten-free grains—it is a limited portion: things like rice, quinoa, and beans, which, of course is not included if you want to eat Paleo. But, if you are somebody who is eating Twinkies, drinking soda, and eating Hungry Man dinners filled with preservatives, then changing to a half a cup of brown rice in a day is an extremely important switch to make.

Detoxing with Water: Tips and Health Benefits

Water is vital for any form of life — our bodies are made up of about 60 percent of the liquid, and without it, we can’t survive. But as crucial as water is for staying hydrated and whatnot, it’s also helpful in flushing out toxins and detoxing our bodies.

Water fasting has been a religious practice for centuries, as it has been considered to not just cleanse the body, but the soul as well. The Ancient Romans and Egyptians, Greek philosophers, Biblical characters, and even Mahatma Gandhi are all known to have practiced water fasting to improve their health and well-beings. Today, water fasting is still a common practice, although its approached with much more caution since it is a rigorous form of cleansing.

4 Details to Design Your Detox

Excerpt:
You may have gone to your local natural foods store and bought a detox in a box. It may have even been a great program that really made you feel well. However, maximizing the benefits and experience of your detox is determined by the details of design – or planning, preparation and personalization.

I often recommend to clients that they do a detox once or twice a year, usually in the spring and again in the fall. Why? Toxins build up in the body day by day through what you consume, breathe in and absorb. That may include processed food, what you drink (sodas, diet drinks, alcohol), smoking, skin care products, soaps, make-up, prescriptions and over the counter medications, cleaning products, and simply the air we breathe. These toxins negatively impact the health and function of our systems and hormones at the cellular level. If you’re going to try a detox, let’s set you up with four details to design a successful detox.

Healthy Lifestyle = Healthy Body: REALLY?

Excerpt:
I intend to make "Detox Your Home" the "Don't Drink & Drive" of the 21st Century.
If we all partake in the "Detox Your Home" consciousness raising, flip the switch, game changing effort, we can not only effectively help to reduce our risk of cancers as well as many other auto-immune and pulmonary diseases, BUT we can also dictate manufacturing trends through good old fashioned all American consumerism and the power of purchase! Because at the end of the day, manufacturers don't want to kill us, they simply want to sell us; and they will sell us whatever we are willing to buy.

But where does one begin, you may be wondering? It seems overwhelming, daunting and maybe you just want to scream, "Stop the world, I want to get off!"

Well here's when being a sitcom writer comes in handy, where short and sweet is the name of the game. So start with this...

Top 4 Liver Detox Foods

Excerpt:
Every branch of natural healthcare seems to have its own perspective on how to help detoxify the liver. Ranging from juice fasts to herbal supplements to saunas to enemas, there is more than one route for helping the liver eliminate toxins from the body. Although several different approaches can be beneficial to the liver’s well-being, it is easy to overlook the fact that certain everyday foods aid in liver detoxification.

The practice of detoxifying the body to rid it of unhealthy toxins has been around for centuries. Technically, toxins are anything that can potentially harm the body, including waste products that result from normal cell activity, such as ammonia, lactic acid and homocysteine, and human-made toxins that we are exposed to in our environment, food, and water. The liver is the body’s first line of defense against toxins, functioning as a filter in preventing toxic substances from accumulating in the blood stream. Unfortunately, a sluggish liver impairs this organ’s vital cleansing function – causing a backup of toxins, a potentially harmful situation.

The Best Colon-Cleansing Diet

Excerpt:
If you experience constipation, bladder and kidney infections, vaginal yeast infections, bad breath, body odour, abdominal cramps, or toe- and fingernail fungus, your colon may be calling for a cleanse.

Some say disease begins in the colon. In fact, the colon is the third most common site for cancer–and colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among Canadians. The colon, or large intestine, is our fueling station as well as our waste management system. Here, in the last five feet of intestinal tract, toxins can take two courses. A clean, healthy colon efficiently eliminates toxins. A clogged, unhealthy colon allows toxins to back up into the liver and bloodstream, polluting the entire system.

The 28-Day, No Alcohol, Gluten-Free, Headache, Dizzy, Colon Cleansing, No Caffeine, Anti-Inflammatory, No Soy, Detox

Excerpt:
I’m in Starbucks and up to my nostrils in latte froth. I’ve signed up for the Danville-based 28 Days to Health Weight Loss and Performance Cleanse, and Brandi Geiger, the program’s bubbly detox leader, is sitting across from me, sipping herbal tea and telling me what my life will taste like for the next month. “No gluten, no dairy, no caffeine, no soy, no sugar, no processed foods, and no alcohol,” says Geiger. “They’re inflammatory foods. Our bodies don’t have the enzymes to break them down and absorb the proteins ... So, are you excited?”

I’m not so much excited as horrified. I like the idea of cleansing my body, but frankly, what am I going to eat for the next four weeks? To appreciate the real scope of cruelty here, it should be noted that I love a buttery croissant for breakfast, I have a penchant for thickly grated parmesan, I drink too much red wine, and I harbor a fondness for Lunardi’s cheesecake. This is going to be the mother of all diets. “It’s not a diet,” says Geiger, who has a master’s degree in exercise science and a background in nutrition. “It’s a lifestyle change. The purpose of this program is not to starve you. You learn about nutrition, the pH of foods, the glycemic index, and how different foods affect your body. It’s about empowering people to take control of their health.”

10 Simple Ways to Detox

Excerpt:
If you consume the majority of your food out of a box or plastic package, then you are allowing for chemicals to leach onto the food and into your body. While you contaminate the environment by choosing foods in packaging, you also contaminate your body: plastic containers alone leach “leftover monomer building blocks,” bisphenol A (BPA), and structural chemicals, among others. These chemicals can be carcinogenic, but they can be avoided by consuming whole foods rather than packaged foods. Instead of buying packaged apple slices, buy whole organic apples. Instead of buying canned green beans, buy fresh. If you minimize your purchasing of packaged foods, you will also minimize the amount of dangerous food additives you consume, and you won’t contribute so much to the landfill.

3 Things My Detox Taught Me About Blogging

Excerpt:
First few days were difficult but not unexpected; after that came the harder battle. How do I resist all those tempting offers of happy hours with girlfriends and dining out with my boyfriend? I didn’t miss the food, but I’d torture myself thinking about the ‘idea’ of it – the experiences around food. Kinda like when we torture ourselves thinking about the time we don’t have to blog or work on our media kit. You might have to trade in that precious happy hour time to work on that next blog post or finally update that media kit. To get what you want, you have to prioritize and commit to it above everything else.

The Sugar Detox Diet

Excerpt:
I have a serious sugar problem and I will explain that more in another post in a few days.  I really need to break both the sugar addiction and the snacking habit that lead to the sugar addiction.  The Maker’s Diet beings with a VERY strict 14 day phase 1 intended to break sugar and wheat addictions and balance the hormones in the body.   We are following the food restrictions, except for the addition of pork.  (Again, something I’ll address in another post).  So for the first 14 days of October we are eating meat, chicken, fish, eggs, most vegetables, berries (no other fruit), healthy fats, a few nuts, and lentils.  No sugar, no wheat, no beans, and no caffeine.  Its pretty extreme. (Raw cow’s milk is allowed, but we are skipping that due to food allergies. We will probably have a little bit of goat’s milk cheese during phase 1).

Feeling Toxic? Four Tips For a Fall Detox

Excerpt:
Clear out your bathroom: Believe it or not, a good detox should start with your environment since that is where your toxins are and the bathroom is the biggest culprit. Think of all the products we put on our skin, and imagine how the daily absorption of these chemicals adds up over a lifetime. This long-term exposure is a definite hormonal and health concern. Your cleansing products should be free of sodium lauryl sulphate, a harsh detergent present in shampoos and cleansers. The products you use on your body or face should be free of methylparabens, propylparabens, formaldehyde, imidazolidinyl urea, methylisothiazolinone, propylene glycol, paraffin, isopropyl alcohol, and sodium lauryl sulphate. You should know that most perfumed products contain many of these harmful chemicals, but the ingredients are not identified on the label. Therefore, look for products that contain natural oils and fragrances. Take a look through your cosmetics from shampoo to hair gel to eye make-up remover -- you may be surprised to find many of these not-so-friendly ingredients.

We are exposed to toxins every day and a build-up can affect our neurological, immune and endocrine (hormone) systems. The most common offenders are air pollution, food additives, pesticides, alcohol, cigarette smoke and heavy metals.
