DIY Juice Cleanse

Excerpt:

A juice cleanse can be quite pricey if you order it through a company. A three day cleanse will cost around $200 total ($66 per day). Our 3 day do-it-yourself juice cleanse costs about $80 total ($27 per day). At this cost, you could purchase a decent juicer, all of the ingredients for our DIY three day cleanse, and still save more money than you would purchasing a cleanse from a company! Don’t get us wrong, juicing can be time consuming and if you don’t have the time to juice, ordering from a company is the way to go.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water within a few days before your juice cleanse starts. Eliminate any “bad” food including fast food, soda, ice cream, alcohol, junk food, etc. You will need six jars with lids for your juices if you plan to prepare them all at once...

Excerpt:

9 Things You Didn't Know About Detoxing

Excerpt:
Long Term vs. Short Term Detox
Detox programs can be short-term or long-term, but they all aim to release toxins from the body. Short-term detox programs should include: 24-hour juice fasting, chelation therapy and heavy metal removal, colon cleansing (colonics), skin cleansing, safe mercury removal, intravenous injections.

Long-term detox programs should include, but are not limited to: dietary changes such as avoiding meats, high-carbohydrates or sweeteners, and eating more vegetables and fruits or garlic; drinking fluids (water, vegetable and fruit juice, herbal tea); taking vitamins and supplements. It is also recommended to exercise (Yoga, Tai Chi), try alternative therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy; and try methods to reduce stress like massage, herbal soaks, or meditation.

But you’ve never cleansed before! A little apprehensive, you want a safe, gentle and natural cleanse without trying the expensive cleansing programs currently on the market.

The Best Supplements for a Candida Cleanse

Excerpt:

Candida yeast infections are caused by a few different species of fungus. Candida albicans, the most common culprit, typically proliferates in people who have weakened immune systems, unbalanced intestinal microorganisms or who don't practice good hygiene. Candida species prefer warm, moist areas of the body, such as the genitals, mouth and underarms. If left unchecked, candida infections can become systemic and potentially life threatening. Localized candida infections are often treated with antifungal medications, although there are natural supplements used systemically as cleanses that cause fewer side effects.

Garlic
A popular and economic antifungal supplement appropriate for a candida cleanse is raw garlic. Garlic has powerful antimicrobial properties due to the compound allicin, which attacks fungus while preserving and boosting the beneficial bacteria of the digestive tract, according to "Chronic Candidiasis: Your Natural Guide to Healing with Diet, Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs, Exercise, and Other Natural Methods." Garlic also stimulates the liver and large intestine, which gives the entire body a potent detoxifying boost. Raw garlic can be consumed by itself or within food. Garlic pills provide many of the same benefits as raw garlic without the odorous breath.

6 Easy Ways to Detox Every Day

Excerpt:
The concept of detoxing doesn't have to be scary; there's no need to feel deprived, as you're taking care of your body! Incorporate these doable tips into your daily routine to support your health and feel your best every day.

1. Drink hot water with lemon: Make a cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice part of your morning ritual. As you hydrate with H2O, the lemon works to balance your body's pH and aid in healthy digestion.

2. Sweat it out: Beyond weight-loss goals, a quick cardio session at the gym builds sweat, which helps your body eliminate toxins. If you have access to a sauna or steam room at the gym, even better! A little extra time in these facilities after a solid workout will help you sweat, detox, and purify your body double time.

Don’t Be Fooled by These Detox Myths

Excerpt:
Wouldn’t it be great if changing the way you eat for a few days could undo months of overindulging, heavy drinking, stress overload, or subsisting on cold coffee and stale office pastries? What if, by embarking on a week-long cleanse, you could press the reset button on all of your internal organs and start back at square one?

When you look at it this way, doesn’t the entire premise of a detox sound a little silly? I mean, think about it. What’s going to have a greater impact on your health — a 72-hour regimen chock full of oddball foods and teas you’ll never eat or drink again, or the stuff that’s landing on your plate the other 362 days of the year?

I get asked about detoxes all the time. Are they a good idea? Is there any truth to them?

Spring Detox: I Do Love a Challenge

Excerpt:
Here I am, on day 10 of a 14-day “Spring detox” with a big group from my gym.  And I’m miserable.  Okay, perhaps that’s a bit too dramatic- I’m not miserable, but I’m definitely not feeling like myself.  However, I am learning a lot…

Past cleanse experiences have left me feeling weak and hungry- not something I was willing to put myself through with a young family and busy career to manage.  Jennifer Morris, the owner of Crossfit Altitude, and Dr. Jordan Robertson, ND, are leading this group, and explained that the meaning of this detox is to:
  • give yourself a break from daily habits
  • incorporate more nutrients, sleep, and healthy habits
  • learn about how your body works
  • overcome cravings, vices, and unhealthy habits.

Bingo.  I decided to join in to break myself of a few habits that have crept in; namely, near-nightly sweets, a drink with dinner, and far too much coffee. There’s strength in numbers, right?  And it’s been a couple of years since I’ve done a cleanse, so it seemed like a good way to kick-start myself into better health and better nutrition.  And I do love a challenge.

Easy Detox Diet Tips Anyone Can Do Starting Today

Excerpt:
A true detox diet can seem daunting. The sacrifice of cutting out sugar, caffeine, alcohol and refined carbohydrates can seem overwhelming. Sometimes it helps to take small steps before jumping into a detox with both feet. Here are a few easy detox diet tips anyone can do starting today.

Switch coffee to green tea
Even though coffee may have benefits if consumed in small enough quantities, during a detox, it’s important to cut it out. Coffee is very acidic and can increase existing inflammation in the body. Combine this with cream and sugar and you’ve got an inflammatory bombshell that will inhibit weight loss, not to mention chronic pain relief. Green tea, on the other hand, will give you a little caffeine boost, but is much more alkalize, preventing inflammation.

5 Things to Remember Next Time You Decide to Detox

Excerpt:
It’s the phrase heard round the world come Monday morning, usually after a weekend spent downing a few too many margaritas and “recuperating” with greasy egg-and-cheese bagels and bacon-infused Bloody Marys: Man, I really need to detox. These words are usually followed up with a quick trip to our favorite juice shop and a pledge to never eat processed food again, and voila: like magic, the detox process has commenced. Right?

Well, not so much. And this misunderstanding of the term “detox” is exactly why Refinery29 decided to break it down for us. Because, while a good chunk of folks have uttered these exact words, it’s doubtful many could explain what they actually mean. Here, five key points from Refinery29′s piece to remember about the ubiquitous detox:

1. When we think of detoxification, most of us think of our livers (probably because they've taken a bit of a beating over the weekend), but it's important to remember the other organs of detoxification, as well: the skin, the kidneys and the colon. The skin eliminates toxins through sweat, meaning: exercise is crucial. The kidney and the colon filter toxins through blood, urine and waste, so it's important to make sure you're getting enough fiber and water during the detox process.

Detox Sees Reporter Lose Seven Pounds

Excerpt:
Seven pounds in as many days; that’s how much I lost when I undertook what I thought would be a horrific week-long detox, only to discover that eating well isn’t all that bad!

When I was approached by fitness and wellness coach Sindy Matthews, who has set up two Kick Start Fat Loss (KSFL) clubs in Banbury, asking me if I wanted to review an online seven-day elimination challenge, I must admit it filled me with slight trepidation. But that was before I understood what KSFL is all about – and before I met Sindy.

Contrary to other plans when the main aim is to lose as much weight as possible, the aim of the challenge is to break sugar addiction, detoxify the body and cells, regulate blood sugar levels to stop cravings, give you more energy and lose body fat and inches.

Users Claim Oil Pulling Can Be Natural Detox and Remedy

Excerpt:
Oil pulling is the latest health trend with a growing following. These aren't oils for the kitchen, but more like for the bathroom.

The ancient remedy and so-called natural detox and cure all is a big hit in Hollywood and is now blowing up on social media.

"You use about a tablespoon of oil of your choice. Olive oil, coconut oil and sesame oil as long as it's a natural oil," user Lindsey Nguyen said. "You swish it in your mouth back and forth for about 10 to 15 minutes and then you would spit it out."

Nguyen says it works.
"I've been doing it for about 10 years. Personally, I started for my allergies. I tried everything," she said. "I'm not suffering with my allergies now and there's other things that they say it helps with as well, weight loss."

Houston dentist Dr. Terri Alani says she began researching the practice after inquiries from patients on Facebook.

"Supposedly it can actually help whiten your teeth. They say it helps headaches, allergies, sinuses, insomnia, may heal cuts and helps with gum disease," Alani said.

5 Tips for a Weekend Detox

Excerpt:
After a busy workweek, a quick weekend detox retreat can boost morale and reinvigorate your health for the following. However, at Urban Remedy, we know going to a retreat can get cumbersome. Here are some weekend activities and foods/juices you can try for an especially detoxifying weekend, without venturing too far off schedule.

Beets: Beets, the ruby of root vegetables, are bursting with minerals like magnesium, calcium, zinc, and iron. These minerals help clean the blood by flushing toxins from the body. With cleaner blood, oxygen moves more easily to the heart, brain, and other organs, boosting energy and mental clarity. At Urban Remedy, we love roasted beets at dinner or sipping them throughout the day in our After Party for that extra kick of wellness.

Sauna: Sweat is your friend! Not only does sweat regulate body temperature, but it also eradicates toxins through your glands and skin in less than 15 minutes! An important but often forgotten trick to remember when visiting the sauna is to take rehydration breaks.

Do Detox Diets Really Work?

Excerpt:
Detox diets vary widely and can last for as few as four days to as long as one month. Many involve some version of a liquid diet – giving up solid food for a few days and then gradually reintroducing certain foods such as organic fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds along with vitamin and mineral supplements. Red meat, wheat, sugar, processed foods, caffeine and alcohol are usually avoided.

Some detox programs involve replacing one or two meals with a high protein, vitamin-rich shake. Most include detoxification “boosters” in the form of herbal laxatives and diuretics, probiotics (to replace healthy bacteria in the gut), nutrients and antioxidants.

Real People: The 21-Day Sugar Detox

Excerpt:
It’s in everything. This is something I knew, but recently had to accept when I started the 21-Day Sugar Detox with Mr. K last weekend. I’m not sure what the push was that actually made us go through with it, but it happened. We went to Sam’s Club and loaded up on water, veggies, meat, and almonds. Oh, and coconut oil. And it was on.

No noodles and pasta. No bread. No fruit. No soda. No fun.

We started it not really knowing what we were doing. We hadn’t bought the book. We didn’t have more than a list of good foods and bad foods to go off of and a few recipes we had pulled from Pinterest. We were flying semi-blind.

We started on a Saturday so we could cook everything and really give it a full out “go” as far as following the game plan was concerned. We pretty much stuck to the following: eggs, bacon, spinach, almonds, mushrooms, onions, and water. That was for the first couple day. We were pretty strict. In the book there are different levels. I took the quiz and we were level 1 which is the strictest. It says you can have a few “extra” things like a Granny Smith Apple once a day, but no more than that.

Your Sugar Detox Plan

Excerpt:
You judiciously avoid baked goods, sweeten your coffee with Splenda and steer clear of high-fructose corn syrup. But believe it or not, you may still be addicted to sugar. "I was a sugar addict," recalls Sarah Wilson, a journalist, health coach, and author of the book, I Quit Sugar: Your Complete 8-Week Detox Program & Cookbook. "I hid behind the so-called 'healthy sugars' like honey, dark chocolate and fruit. Which made things harder in some ways, because first I had to face my denial."

There is a compelling case to be made against the sweet stuff. Sugar has been linked to myriad negative health outcomes, including diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune diseases and more. And sugar is sneaky, lurking where we least expect it—even in seemingly healthy foods. "Our modern food system is set up around sugar, and seductively so," Sarah notes. "A granola bar can contain more sugar than a block of chocolate; everyday barbecue sauce, more than chocolate topping." After developing numerous health problems–from mood disorders to insomnia to Graves disease—Sarah decided to nix sugar from her diet in a last-ditch effort to reclaim her health. She drastically pared back the amount of sugars, both added and natural, in her diet. Fruit, honey, agave syrup—all of these foods were off-limits.

Teatox: The Newest Way to Detox

Excerpt:
If you can’t stomach the green juices in most cleanses, there’s a new way to detox: teatox. These plans take tea—one of the world’s most popular beverages—and spruce it up with a variety of ingredients, promising results such as weight loss, detoxification, and increased energy, just as other detoxes claim.

And while there’s some evidence that drinking flavonoid-rich tea protects your heart, skin, brain, and bones; helps you manage stress and maintain weight; and fends off cancer and type 2 diabetes, there’s no published research to show teatoxes are safe or effective for weight loss or anything else. But since they are considered dietary supplements rather than foods, the companies behind them don’t need to prove any of the claims listed on the labels.

Fruity Radish Detox Smoothie

Excerpt:
It’s a refreshing and rejuvenating drink for a hot summer day or a perfect breakfast when you’ve overeaten or eaten heavy or unhealthy foods the day prior. One note: this smoothie is not for you if you don’t care for radishes as they are the predominant flavor in this recipe. You can always reduce the amount of them for a fruitier taste if you prefer. I happen to love the crisp, peppery flavor of radishes!

All of the ingredients in this smoothie have some kind of detoxification properties…

Strawberries contain a chemical compound known as phenols. A certain phenol found in strawberries is anthocyanin. This compound is what gives the fruit is rich red color. Anthocyanin is known to have antioxidant properties which when consumed increases the body’s uric acid levels serving as an antioxidant agent. In addition, a recent study found that extracts from strawberries activate a protein in our bodies called Nrf2. Once activated, Nrf2 boosts your body’s internal production of antioxidants. It increases certain enzymes which remove toxins from cells. And it has also been shown to lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

Watermelon helps the body flush out toxins because it contains the organic compound citrulline, which is an amino acid that has been shown to help the liver and kidneys filter and get rid of ammonia. Ammonia comes in external forms, but is also a by-product of the proteins our bodies are burning up constantly for energy, and it’s quite damaging to our cells.
