Five Things I Learned On The Juice Detox

Excerpt:
A few weeks ago I tried a two-day juice detox.

While juicing may be very a la mode - everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Millie Mackintosh getting in on the zeitgest - anyone who knows me would be surprised that I a) volunteered to to consume nothing but juice for 48hrs and b) actually managed to stick to it.

Because, like most 26-year-olds, I have a life. I like to eat, drink and stay up late; I only keep tabs on my wellbeing when I can remember (like on Monday morning) or can find time between work and my social life (rarely).

So it stands to reason that I would have a terrible time on the juice detox. I was certainly expecting hell. But, in fact, it was pretty damn good... and I learned a thing or two about juicing.

You don't get hungry

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that when you don't eat, you get hungry. And as someone with a fairly big appetite, the idea of consuming nothing but juice, herbal tea and water for 48 hours was kind of terrifying.

3 Things to Know Before Starting a Detox (And How to Survive It)

Excerpt:
So, you’ve been hearing about detoxing – but you kind of wonder, “Meh? Is it that big a deal? I mean, is it that good for me?”

The answer is yes. Think of your body like a house. Now, suppose the there’s a garbage strike in your neighborhood. Not only are you stuck with the garbage, you’re not even allowed to place it on the curb.

Which means that you have to stack it up in the garage. It’s fine for a couple of days, maybe even up to a week. But by the second month, the garage smells horrible and you have creepy crawly critters that are loving the refuse. They’re thriving in it.

The same thing happens to our body. We need to get rid of the garbage. Think of the air pollution, pesticides and environmental poisons around us. It’s important to get rid the body of as many of those toxins as possible, for overall health.

And that’s where detoxing comes in.

It’s difficult to know how toxic your body is without pricey hair or stool sample tests. However, there are basic indicators that can serve as a green light to start a cleanse. If you’re overweight, you’re toxic. If you’re constipated, you’ve got some toxins. If you’re diabetic, you’re toxic.

What Is The Clay Diet? Benefits And Risks Of The Newest Detox Trend

Excerpt:
If you thought clay was best used to build houses or make pottery, think again. It turns out that it is also being used in detox diets. Yes, really.

The Clay Diet involves stirring edible clay, such as Bentonite, into a glass of water to drink. It isn't a food replacement, but is designed to accompany your regular diet.

The clay is supposed to absorb and remove toxins, impurities and chemicals from the body.

The diet's biggest cheerleader is 'Divergent' actress Shailene Woodley, but other clay users include Zoe Kravitz and Elle Macpherson, according to the MailOnline.

In an interview with Into The Gloss, Shailene explained her penchant for clay: "I've discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body."

Devotees defend their clay choices by saying that it has been ingested by people from across the world for hundreds of years (Shailene first learnt of eating clay from her African taxi driver), but experts say this doesn't necessarily make it advisable.

Can a Detox Retreat Work for You?

Excerpt:
It’s hard to change habits when you are running your normal life and trying to balance work, family and friends, so when I was invited to detox/de-stress with Northumbria Retreats I jumped at the chance. However, I really had no idea what I was letting myself in for.

Recently founded by London PR guru Bianca Bonomi, the aim of the retreats are not just to increase fitness and lose weight, but to make permanent changes to the participants diet and lifestyle.

A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE
When I arrived I was greeted with a fresh kale and pear juice, and the retreat regime was explained to me. We would rise at 7am, start the day with warm water and lemon, and then walk a few miles across fields to an outdoor fitness class. After walking back, we would have a fresh juice, and attend a yoga class, and/or go for a long walk through the countryside. A lunch of salad would follow, with more water, then in the afternoon we would be whisked off to the spa for massage (hooray!) returning in the evening for vegetable soup and a talk on subjects such as mediation and positive thinking. There would be no coffee, no tea, no meat or fish or dairy produce and strictly no alcohol! This certainly wasn’t the diet I was following at home, but I was keen to give it a go.

Detox with Broccoli Tea

Excerpt:
The impact of air pollution on health is undeniable. It's linked to diseases such as cancer and heart disease, and the World Health Organization estimates it kills 7 million people yearly across the globe.1,2

Although the United States has pretty good air quality compared to other countries, experts think it’s only a matter of time before conditions get worse here and around the world.

With environmental toxins constantly on the rise, it makes a lot of sense to implement ways to protect yourself. And according to a recent study, a tea composed of broccoli sprouts - believe it or not - may do that and more.

What I Learned from My 48-Hour Cleanse

Excerpt:
My lunch this past Friday was a strange, blue-grey liquid that had the consistency of watered-down prison gruel. If I had to give it a name, I would have called it the Bruised Puke.

Why was I subjecting myself to this so-called banana-blueberry “smoothie?” Like a lot of people, I decided to start the new year off by detoxifying, but not with the ridiculous Master Cleanse – where water is pretty much all you consume – or some bizarro, ultra-organic Goop diet prescribed by the ever-perfect and equally condescending Gwyneth Paltrow.

I went for a more accessible option: Dr. Oz’s 48-hour weekend cleanse. A few things attracted me to this cleanse: 1) It had solid food. I’m not a fan of juice on the best of days. 2) It was only 48 hours. Being hungry makes me cranky and for my friends’ and family’s sake, I wanted to minimize their exposure to a monster Maddie. 3) Oprah did it.

Despite these bonuses, however, the cleanse had one major drawback: It lacked protein.

How to Detox Without Starving Yourself

Excerpt:
Earlier this year my husband and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary. If you were following along, you might remember that we didn’t get to have much of a honeymoon after our wedding since my book was scheduled to launch just four weeks later. (Yes, I regret these events being so close together. C’est la vie.)

So for our first anniversary we felt we deserved a real break, a relaxing trip with no friends, family or even Toaster. We took five glorious days off and chilled on a beach in Mexico, making a point to spend more time in the spa than in the gym.

As you might expect we felt a little doughy when we got home, so we immediately called our local juice company and ordered a 7 day detox cleanse to make up for it.

JUST KIDDING.

I know the temptation is there to combat what feels like extreme “bad” behavior with extreme “good” behavior. I get emails nearly every week from someone slyly asking me if it’s cool to try something intense like a juice cleanse or fasting to “get back on track” after a particularly decadent holiday.

I Survived Dr. Hyman's 10-Day Detox

Excerpt:
So why did we decide to detox?

For me, it was all about my blood glucose, specifically my fasting numbers. I’ve been suffering from the dawn effect for quite a while and nothing seemed to consistently bring my fasting numbers down. After more than a decade of following the American Diabetes Association’s dietary guidelines, I found they just didn’t work for me anymore. I didn’t want to add another medication unless absolutely necessary so I tried giving up wheat and going vegan. While that regimen may work perfectly well for some, it didn’t work for me since most vegan sources of protein also contain carbohydrates. My post-meal BG numbers were controlled, but my fasting numbers were not. I decided the diet recommended in the detox was going to be my last attempt at controlling my BG with diet and metformin only.

For the CompostMaster, although he’s amazingly healthy, he has been having trouble losing weight, specifically around his middle. After reading the book, we became convinced the detox would work for both of us.

Detox Bath: Why and How

Excerpt:
A detox bath is one of the easiest healing therapies that can be done to facilitate and enhance our body’s natural detoxification process.

The liver removes toxins and metabolic waste from the body by converting them to water-soluble compounds. Once water-soluble they can be eliminated from the body through urine. Some waste products are not water-soluble and are transformed by the liver and excreted in the bile. The bile is then transported to the intestines where it exits the body through our bowels. Toxins not eliminated or completely removed by either of these processes may be eliminated through our skin via our sweat.

Typically, a detox bath is made with epsom salt also known as magnesium sulfate, which not only draws out toxins, but has health benefits of its own:
  • Ease stress and improves sleep and concentration
  • Help muscles and nerves function properly
  • Regulate activity of 325+ enzymes
  • Help prevent artery hardening and blood clots
  • Make insulin more effective
  • Reduce inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps
  • Improve oxygen use
  • Flush toxins
  • Improve absorption of nutrients
  • Help form joint proteins, brain tissue and mucin proteins
  • Help prevent or ease migraine headaches

Reset the Clock with a Full Body Detox

Excerpt:
The point of detoxing is to clean your blood. It’s about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. A detox programme helps the body’s natural cleansing process by resting the organs through fasting; stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body; promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin; improving circulation of the blood; and refuelling the body with healthy nutrients.

Surrounded daily by pollutants and toxins in the air we breathe; the processed foods we eat; the medicines we’re prescribed; the perfumes, shampoos, soaps and creams we use; and the chemicals we clean our houses with, we all stand to benefit not just physically but mentally from a detox.

That said, front shop assistant Emmanuel Ndlovu (Clicks Boskruin) advises that children, pregnant and nursing mothers, and individuals suffering from chronic medical conditions should not even contemplate a detox without consulting their physician. “It is also important to check the ingredients of any supplements to ensure they don’t contain anything that the customer may be allergic to and make them aware of any possible side effects to look out for.”

Symptoms that may be alleviated by detoxification include allergies, unexplained fatigue, bloating, irritated skin, menstrual problems, mental confusion, constant hunger, irritability, anxiety, bad breath or body odour, chronic postnasal drip, achy muscles, trouble sleeping, puffy eyes, and bags under the eyes.

Best Ways to Detox

Excerpt:
The best ways to detox are those tried and true methods to get rid of whatever toxins you may have in your body and increase your overall health. While these tips can all be used on a daily basis for overall increased wellbeing, as with any health advice you find on the Internet, be sure to consult your doctor before taking our word for it.

1. Stop Exposure to Toxins

If you need to detox, the best first step is to discontinue using or consuming whatever toxins you are trying to get rid of in the first place. Stop smoking, drinking, consuming caffeine, eating fatty foods, and indulging in refined sugars. Limit your access to chemicals, such as those in cleaners and health and beauty products.

2. Exercise
Among many other great health benefits, regular exercise is a terrific way to de-stress, sweat out toxins, and live an overall healthier life. Exercise for at least one hour every day for better health, a better mood, and a better body. Find a fitness routine that you enjoy and stick to it.

Green Beauty Smoothie: Detox and Cleanse

Excerpt:
Green smoothies are a refreshing and delicious way to detoxify the liver and cleanse the body while still enjoying a delicious treat. A cleaned-up liver can process nasty toxins more efficiently which leads to clear, radiant and younger-looking skin. Blending fruits and vegetables in a smoothie versus juicing, boosts the absorption of all the beneficial vitamins and nutrients by keeping the fiber in the mix. This aids in cleansing and gets the body back into balance resulting in more energy and a natural glow.

Remember to choose organic when possible to avoid heavily pesticide-sprayed produce. Pesticides are toxic to the body, far from beautiful and defeat the purpose of detoxification.

Filled to the brim with purifying ingredients, this revitalizing smoothie is best enjoyed soaking up the spring sunshine!

How to Detox for Summer the Healthy (and Easy!) Way

Excerpt:
With summer in full swing, many of us are inspired to clean up our acts internally. However, a drastic cleanse isn't always the answer. Fortunately, there are many gentler, more accessible ways to help our bodies detox on a daily basis, such as natural approaches to food that can easily fit into our lifestyles for a week, a month or even forever.

For an easy, safe, gentle and healthy detox that does not require a full-on cleanse, we asked mom, physician and self-proclaimed health fanatic Dr. Amy Shah for some tips. Now based in Arizona, the NYC expat suggests a simple adjustment: eliminate wheat, dairy, soy, processed foods, sugar (fruit is allowed) and artificial sweeteners from your diet. As for what you should eat, think about upping your intake of fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables, for starters.

Which means more than lettuce! While Dr. Shah stresses the importance of eating "three cups of leafy greens and also three cups of cruciferous vegetables, which includes broccoli, kale and cauliflower" daily, you can also enjoy foods such as avocado, sweet potato, kale chips, lentils and chickpeas. She recommends following this easy detox for 21 to 24 days, if not longer, since it's healthy and consistent with long-term goals of wellness and longevity.

Optimal Health for a Vibrant Life Detox: Day 13, 14 & 15

Excerpt:
The recommendations for Day 13 of the Optimal Health for a Vibrant Life Detox by Tiffany Cruikshank included considering adding new supplements to my diet and applying a castor oil pack. I ended up coming to the conclusion that given this is my first round of detox, I would leave out these steps for the time being. I will certainly consider the supplements recommended in the future, but for now I would like to keep supplements to the minimum and focus on whole foods instead.

I did end drink my liver detox tea and admired my beautiful flowers! I made myself clean protein pancakes using gluten free oat flour, egg whites, hemp protein powder and milled flaxseed with an organic honey drizzle. Yum!

I focused on eating clean foods for the rest of the day and relaxing when I could!

On Day 14, I met my requirement of spending time in nature when I went on a long walk with Zeke and later went to a potluck dinner that was entirely outdoors!

I went to the local farmer's market and picked up an entire fridge full of organic and mostly local foods--eggs, carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, onions, sweet potatoes, ginger, pineapple and bread.

Chef Wendell: Liver Detox with Food

Excerpt:
The liver is the hardest working organ in the body, but it needs your help. You already know what your furnace filter looks like right before it’s changed. It’s overwhelmed with crud and struggles mightily. The whole idea of a healthy liver is to filter your blood and contain snarky contaminants so they won’t become a health hazard.

Your liver continuously filters your blood of Pharmaceutical drug residue and snarky agrichemicals added to the food we eat and expel them via elimination.

That’s how your liver works. It’s your body’s filter that traps toxins that enter the body through digestion, skin, or breathing. The liver detoxifies the body by filtering the blood, producing bile, and breaking down toxins and waste.

If your liver is over-taxed, it can’t process toxins efficiently. There are many foods that can help cleanse the liver naturally by stimulating its natural ability to clean toxic waste from the body.. Those with toxic livers often suffer from acne, eczema, psoriasis, bloating, headaches, and more, from carrying around an excessive toxic burden.

Ways to Detox After a Splurge

Excerpt:
Celebrating holidays with close friends and fabulous food is key to a happy lifestyle. With all the temptations from drinks, to rich dishes and desserts, it’s easy to overdo it.

But there’s no reason you have to slip into bad habits throughout the week or worry that you’ve wrecked your healthy eating routine for good. Try some of these easy and tasty detox tips to get yourself back on track, in a hurry.

Give Your Liver Some Love
When you splurge on cocktails and sweets, it’s bad news for your liver since it has to work extra hard to process both (think of your liver being at the office on a sunny Saturday afternoon, while you’re sunning at the beach). So if you’re feeling drained or fatigued you can bet your liver has some beef with you! Base your meals for the next three days on these core foods that your liver will love: kale, spinach, watercress, broccoli and asparagus while passing on sweets and booze.

49 Detox Recipes (That Actually Contain Food)

Excerpt:
New year, new you — at least, that’s what all the magazines say. If, like many of us, you’ve indulged just a bit too much over the holiday season (what, cookies and eggnog aren’t a balanced meal?), it might be a good time to detox (but don’t run away just yet).

The word “detox” tends to bring to mind scary-intense juice cleanses or a gluten- dairy-meat-grain-sugar-caffeine-free diet that will make you run away screaming (and hungry). But never fear — when we say “detox,” we’re talking about refocusing the mind, body, and palate on healthy, tasty, and nutritious foods. Instead of going crazy-restrictive and nixing all food groups except kale and steamed fish (not exactly a sustainable diet), let’s use the first weeks of 2014 to explore new tastes, textures, ingredients, and cooking techniques. Most of these recipes are based on healthy staples like whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and both vegetarian and meat protein sources.

The following collection of recipes will get you psyched about eating well again (and might even help kick that cookie-a-day habit you picked up over the past two weeks). For a super-easy meal plan, just pick one recipe from each category per day.

5 Instant Daily Detox Solutions

Excerpt:
Anytime is a great time to detox. It’s not just for post-holiday binge relief. Experts believe that trying to eat as cleanly as possible – as often as possible – will help your body function the way it’s supposed to.

The good news? Effective daily detoxing doesn’t necessarily require strange ingredients or starvation.

Whole Foods
People in general should opt for whole, unprocessed foods and control their portion sizes. So throw out anything that is processed and has refined sugar (an easy guideline to follow – if you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it).

The Power Of Lemons
Start the day with half a fresh lemon squeezed into a glass of warm water, which is believed to cleanse the organs and give your body a nice boost of vitamin c.

Ashley Roberts Reveals Pre-Holiday Detox

Ashley Roberts makes sure she cuts back on food and ups her exercise regime before she goes away on vacation.

Ashley Roberts ramps up her diet and workout routine two weeks before she goes on holiday.

"At least two weeks before a holiday I make sure I'm really strict on my diet. Working out four times a week pre-holiday is a must but diet is almost 80 per cent of it," Ashley told British magazine Now.

"I'll eat really clean and I'll avoid refined sugar and dairy and I don't eat a huge amount of meat any more - that's my choice. I get a lot of my protein from spirulina. You can pour a little bit in some orange juice."

My Seven Day Cleanse Experience

Excerpt:
Like a gazelle sensing a predator among the herd, my husband becomes still and unblinking after I mention my plans to try a diet detox.
Though he feigns interest, I smell his fear and imagine one of those red weather tickers scrolling behind his eyes as he awaits further instructions on whether to head for the basement or simply evacuate.

Despite the fact that I'm not a detox sort of person, the popularity is undeniable. From celebrities like Beyoncé and Gwyneth Paltrow, to my own friends and acquaintances, everyone seems to be doing them.

With the arrival of clothes-too-small-for-me season, I decide to embark on a detox of my own that promises to remove toxins, cleanse my system (though I could argue that one serving of edamame does roughly the same thing in a lot less time), and help shed a few pounds.

The Skinny on Cleanses and Detox Diets

Excerpt:
In a health and fitness trend that crosses gender lines, athletes looking for quick weight loss are increasingly turning to cleanses and detox diets. These rituals are highly touted by big (and small) name celebrity endorsers and espoused by experts claiming to have found the ultimate solution for slimming down. But how much is fact and how much is fiction?

Putting it right up front, these trends are simply another way to leach money out of your wallet. While there may be some merit to simply avoiding some foods to clean out the bowels and other organs, you will, without fail, rob your body of vital nutrients, especially if done for a prolonged period of time. And for hard-training athletes who already have to fight to keep nutrient levels balanced, this is a dangerous and unnecessary step.

The diets “work” – i.e. provide some weight loss – simply because of the severe caloric restriction that is usually called for. Unfortunately, that weight loss will no doubt be an unfriendly mix of muscle, possibly a little fat and the excess water your body is storing at any given time.

Detox Your Way to a New You

Excerpt:
If you feel sluggish or bloated, or you're having trouble with aches and pains, or even just suffering with a spell of bad skin - this is your bodies way of telling you that it needs a cleanse, and the best solution for this is to detox.

Food is full of more toxins than ever before, therefore it's important to detox and eliminate the toxins that are becoming obstacles to your health and healing process.

There are various detox diet programs that vary in length from 24 hours to 3-7 days, depending on your individual needs. It's important to find a detox that is right for you, as it is not a supplement for a long-term diet. You should detox at least once a year.

Dr. Peter Bennett, author of the '7 Day Detox Miracle', practises using things like diet, nutrition and herbal medicines to help his patients with acute and chronic health problems. He says: "Detoxification works because it addresses the needs of individual cells. It's critical to detox as it takes the body time to clean the blood."

Kick the Sugar Habit with Detox Program

Excerpt:
You probably don’t want to eat a banana while reading “I Quit Sugar,” a new cookbook and eight-week detox program by Australian journalist Sarah Wilson.

One banana is approximately 55 percent sugar, over half of which is fructose.

Fructose is bad news, according to Wilson.

It makes us eat more, she says in her 2013 book from Clarkson Potter Publishers. It converts directly to fat and has been connected with various cancers. And fructose also makes us sick by doing such damage as inhibiting the immune system, messing with fertility, and causing things like indigestion and malabsorption.

Wilson makes the innocent banana, which seemed like a smart food choice, now feel like a hand grenade.

“I’m responsible for so much guilt in the world,” says Wilson, who adds that agave syrup is another ticking time bomb.

“People get really surprised about that,” she says, adding that a “strong marketing push” has made people believe that agave syrup is better than table sugar. But, Wilson, who writes about her sugar-free life on the blog www.sarahwilson.com, says, agave is 70 percent to 90 percent fructose.

Weekend Detox

Excerpt:
Living in the modern world, our bodies can get to feeling pretty grubby inside. Between the sugars, refined flours, caffeine, alcohol, dairy, chemical food additives, pesticides, and environmental pollutants we encounter, our cells are exposed to myriad toxins and inflammation triggers. The stress of modern life also places a tremendous burden on the organs of elimination, leaving pockets of waste in the colon, and stressing the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system.

Legions swear by juice fasts and other cleanse routines that go for 10 days or more. But a no-fast weekend regimen is a much easier way for a coffee-and-bagel junkie to make real changes in daily routines. “It gives you a chance to take a break from caffeine, sugar, wheat, dairy, and alcohol, and to establish new, healthier habits,” says Elson Haas, MD, author of The New Detox Diet.

Remember, too, that detoxing includes your whole body; a hurried pace, stressful schedules, and festering resentments can create mental and emotional toxins that need to be cleared away.

If you’re new to detox, a weekend cleanse can provide a physical and psychological jump start. If you’re a veteran, regular weekend regimens—one a month is ideal—can help you build on healthful habits.

Here’s a simple, day-by-day plan to guide you through.

ASK A HEALTH COACH: 'Do You Find it Difficult to Cleanse When Others are Not?

Excerpt:
Do you find it difficult to cleanse or detox when you are surrounded by people who are not?
-Carly Y., Cincinnati, Ohio

Carly! That is a great question. The answer is this: it is not as hard as it used to be, and yet, sometimes I still find it challenging. As a health coach, I am frequently trying out the latest and greatest detoxes and cleanses; (at least all those that don't sound completely crazy and trust me! there are a lot of crazy ones out there) I guess it is a hazard of the job! I want to have first hand knowledge of how it works and how it impacts my clients, (and their wallets).

Recently I tried The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet by Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. Over a holiday weekend. While traveling, not once, but TWICE. Now. I know what some of you are thinking: why would she do that? There has to be a better time to try out a cleanse. And, you would be right. There might be a more ideal time to try out a new cleanse. And I might have to wait a really long time for that ideal time to materialize. So, why not try it during a challenging time? Then I know what I am really up against....

Why Do Cleanse Detox Diets Remain So Popular?

Excerpt:
Just in time for swimsuit season, another cleanse diet book has been hovering near the top of the best-seller list; this one, called the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse promises in its subhead to help you “lose up to 15 Pounds in 10 Days!” No wonder it’s selling better than the Green Smoothie Bible, the Detox Diet, or the 3 Day Juice Cleanse, all published within the past six months.

Clearly, many people are embarking on these extreme eating — or rather drinking — plans to lose weight. The diets usually involve drinking smoothies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, consisting of leafy greens like kale and spinach, fruits, and water. (The latest derivation has folks using blenders rather than juicers to retain the pulp and fiber.)

“I have no idea if there’s anything special about these so-called cleansing or detox diets” for weight loss, said Dr. Frank Sacks, a professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at the Harvard School of Public Health. Any rigid diet that eliminates categories of foods and lowers calorie intake, he added, will help people shed pounds, but they usually gain them back after they go back to their old eating habits.

DIY Juice Cleanse

Excerpt:

A juice cleanse can be quite pricey if you order it through a company. A three day cleanse will cost around $200 total ($66 per day). Our 3 day do-it-yourself juice cleanse costs about $80 total ($27 per day). At this cost, you could purchase a decent juicer, all of the ingredients for our DIY three day cleanse, and still save more money than you would purchasing a cleanse from a company! Don’t get us wrong, juicing can be time consuming and if you don’t have the time to juice, ordering from a company is the way to go.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water within a few days before your juice cleanse starts. Eliminate any “bad” food including fast food, soda, ice cream, alcohol, junk food, etc. You will need six jars with lids for your juices if you plan to prepare them all at once...

9 Things You Didn't Know About Detoxing

Excerpt:
Long Term vs. Short Term Detox
Detox programs can be short-term or long-term, but they all aim to release toxins from the body. Short-term detox programs should include: 24-hour juice fasting, chelation therapy and heavy metal removal, colon cleansing (colonics), skin cleansing, safe mercury removal, intravenous injections.

Long-term detox programs should include, but are not limited to: dietary changes such as avoiding meats, high-carbohydrates or sweeteners, and eating more vegetables and fruits or garlic; drinking fluids (water, vegetable and fruit juice, herbal tea); taking vitamins and supplements. It is also recommended to exercise (Yoga, Tai Chi), try alternative therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy; and try methods to reduce stress like massage, herbal soaks, or meditation.

The Best Supplements for a Candida Cleanse

Excerpt:

Candida yeast infections are caused by a few different species of fungus. Candida albicans, the most common culprit, typically proliferates in people who have weakened immune systems, unbalanced intestinal microorganisms or who don't practice good hygiene. Candida species prefer warm, moist areas of the body, such as the genitals, mouth and underarms. If left unchecked, candida infections can become systemic and potentially life threatening. Localized candida infections are often treated with antifungal medications, although there are natural supplements used systemically as cleanses that cause fewer side effects.

Garlic
A popular and economic antifungal supplement appropriate for a candida cleanse is raw garlic. Garlic has powerful antimicrobial properties due to the compound allicin, which attacks fungus while preserving and boosting the beneficial bacteria of the digestive tract, according to "Chronic Candidiasis: Your Natural Guide to Healing with Diet, Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs, Exercise, and Other Natural Methods." Garlic also stimulates the liver and large intestine, which gives the entire body a potent detoxifying boost. Raw garlic can be consumed by itself or within food. Garlic pills provide many of the same benefits as raw garlic without the odorous breath.

6 Easy Ways to Detox Every Day

Excerpt:
The concept of detoxing doesn't have to be scary; there's no need to feel deprived, as you're taking care of your body! Incorporate these doable tips into your daily routine to support your health and feel your best every day.

1. Drink hot water with lemon: Make a cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice part of your morning ritual. As you hydrate with H2O, the lemon works to balance your body's pH and aid in healthy digestion.

2. Sweat it out: Beyond weight-loss goals, a quick cardio session at the gym builds sweat, which helps your body eliminate toxins. If you have access to a sauna or steam room at the gym, even better! A little extra time in these facilities after a solid workout will help you sweat, detox, and purify your body double time.

Don’t Be Fooled by These Detox Myths

Excerpt:
Wouldn’t it be great if changing the way you eat for a few days could undo months of overindulging, heavy drinking, stress overload, or subsisting on cold coffee and stale office pastries? What if, by embarking on a week-long cleanse, you could press the reset button on all of your internal organs and start back at square one?

When you look at it this way, doesn’t the entire premise of a detox sound a little silly? I mean, think about it. What’s going to have a greater impact on your health — a 72-hour regimen chock full of oddball foods and teas you’ll never eat or drink again, or the stuff that’s landing on your plate the other 362 days of the year?

I get asked about detoxes all the time. Are they a good idea? Is there any truth to them?

Spring Detox: I Do Love a Challenge

Excerpt:
Here I am, on day 10 of a 14-day “Spring detox” with a big group from my gym.  And I’m miserable.  Okay, perhaps that’s a bit too dramatic- I’m not miserable, but I’m definitely not feeling like myself.  However, I am learning a lot…

Past cleanse experiences have left me feeling weak and hungry- not something I was willing to put myself through with a young family and busy career to manage.  Jennifer Morris, the owner of Crossfit Altitude, and Dr. Jordan Robertson, ND, are leading this group, and explained that the meaning of this detox is to:
  • give yourself a break from daily habits
  • incorporate more nutrients, sleep, and healthy habits
  • learn about how your body works
  • overcome cravings, vices, and unhealthy habits.

Bingo.  I decided to join in to break myself of a few habits that have crept in; namely, near-nightly sweets, a drink with dinner, and far too much coffee. There’s strength in numbers, right?  And it’s been a couple of years since I’ve done a cleanse, so it seemed like a good way to kick-start myself into better health and better nutrition.  And I do love a challenge.

Easy Detox Diet Tips Anyone Can Do Starting Today

Excerpt:
A true detox diet can seem daunting. The sacrifice of cutting out sugar, caffeine, alcohol and refined carbohydrates can seem overwhelming. Sometimes it helps to take small steps before jumping into a detox with both feet. Here are a few easy detox diet tips anyone can do starting today.

Switch coffee to green tea
Even though coffee may have benefits if consumed in small enough quantities, during a detox, it’s important to cut it out. Coffee is very acidic and can increase existing inflammation in the body. Combine this with cream and sugar and you’ve got an inflammatory bombshell that will inhibit weight loss, not to mention chronic pain relief. Green tea, on the other hand, will give you a little caffeine boost, but is much more alkalize, preventing inflammation.

5 Things to Remember Next Time You Decide to Detox

Excerpt:
It’s the phrase heard round the world come Monday morning, usually after a weekend spent downing a few too many margaritas and “recuperating” with greasy egg-and-cheese bagels and bacon-infused Bloody Marys: Man, I really need to detox. These words are usually followed up with a quick trip to our favorite juice shop and a pledge to never eat processed food again, and voila: like magic, the detox process has commenced. Right?

Well, not so much. And this misunderstanding of the term “detox” is exactly why Refinery29 decided to break it down for us. Because, while a good chunk of folks have uttered these exact words, it’s doubtful many could explain what they actually mean. Here, five key points from Refinery29′s piece to remember about the ubiquitous detox:

1. When we think of detoxification, most of us think of our livers (probably because they've taken a bit of a beating over the weekend), but it's important to remember the other organs of detoxification, as well: the skin, the kidneys and the colon. The skin eliminates toxins through sweat, meaning: exercise is crucial. The kidney and the colon filter toxins through blood, urine and waste, so it's important to make sure you're getting enough fiber and water during the detox process.

Detox Sees Reporter Lose Seven Pounds

Excerpt:
Seven pounds in as many days; that’s how much I lost when I undertook what I thought would be a horrific week-long detox, only to discover that eating well isn’t all that bad!

When I was approached by fitness and wellness coach Sindy Matthews, who has set up two Kick Start Fat Loss (KSFL) clubs in Banbury, asking me if I wanted to review an online seven-day elimination challenge, I must admit it filled me with slight trepidation. But that was before I understood what KSFL is all about – and before I met Sindy.

Contrary to other plans when the main aim is to lose as much weight as possible, the aim of the challenge is to break sugar addiction, detoxify the body and cells, regulate blood sugar levels to stop cravings, give you more energy and lose body fat and inches.

Users Claim Oil Pulling Can Be Natural Detox and Remedy

Excerpt:
Oil pulling is the latest health trend with a growing following. These aren't oils for the kitchen, but more like for the bathroom.

The ancient remedy and so-called natural detox and cure all is a big hit in Hollywood and is now blowing up on social media.

"You use about a tablespoon of oil of your choice. Olive oil, coconut oil and sesame oil as long as it's a natural oil," user Lindsey Nguyen said. "You swish it in your mouth back and forth for about 10 to 15 minutes and then you would spit it out."

Nguyen says it works.
"I've been doing it for about 10 years. Personally, I started for my allergies. I tried everything," she said. "I'm not suffering with my allergies now and there's other things that they say it helps with as well, weight loss."

Houston dentist Dr. Terri Alani says she began researching the practice after inquiries from patients on Facebook.

"Supposedly it can actually help whiten your teeth. They say it helps headaches, allergies, sinuses, insomnia, may heal cuts and helps with gum disease," Alani said.

5 Tips for a Weekend Detox

Excerpt:
After a busy workweek, a quick weekend detox retreat can boost morale and reinvigorate your health for the following. However, at Urban Remedy, we know going to a retreat can get cumbersome. Here are some weekend activities and foods/juices you can try for an especially detoxifying weekend, without venturing too far off schedule.

Beets: Beets, the ruby of root vegetables, are bursting with minerals like magnesium, calcium, zinc, and iron. These minerals help clean the blood by flushing toxins from the body. With cleaner blood, oxygen moves more easily to the heart, brain, and other organs, boosting energy and mental clarity. At Urban Remedy, we love roasted beets at dinner or sipping them throughout the day in our After Party for that extra kick of wellness.

Sauna: Sweat is your friend! Not only does sweat regulate body temperature, but it also eradicates toxins through your glands and skin in less than 15 minutes! An important but often forgotten trick to remember when visiting the sauna is to take rehydration breaks.
